I read this great article recently about comparisons between old school gaming or “Role” playing v modern gaming or “Roll” playing, where it compares the lack of imagination and thought that has to go in to running a modern game compared to an old school game. Some comparisons relate to the use of masses of skill tables that just require a simple dice roll to complete complex tasks compared to the thought and imagination that has to go in to the early forms of gaming I and a few others out there remember.
I am currently running an old school D&D 2e campaign which I am finding much more rewarding than the 4e campaign I ran a few years ago as it does require a more vivid use of both my and my players imagination.
Have a read of the article and see what you think, I like new systems as well but I really do like the old Fashioned Role Playing style of gaming the most.
